Langtang Gosainkunda Lake Trek: A Journey Through Sacred Lakes and Himalayan Valleys
The Langtang Gosainkunda Lake Trek is widely regarded as one of the best trekking trails near Kathmandu. This unforgettable route combines the Langtang Valley Trek and the Gosainkunda Lake Trek, with the option to extend your adventure into the Helambu Circuit—offering a complete exploration of the stunning Langtang National Park, one of Nepal’s 12 national parks.
Your 18-day trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, the trailhead of your adventure. The journey ends in Dhunche, another beautiful mountain town. Along the way, you’ll pass through dense forests of rhododendron and oak, traverse high mountain passes, visit sacred alpine lakes, and witness dramatic Himalayan landscapes close to the Tibetan border.Surya Kunda is one of the several sacred lakes in the Gosainkunda area, situated slightly above the main Gosainkunda Lake. It is often visited during the Janai Purnima festival by pilgrims, along with other lakes like Bhairav Kunda, Nag Kunda, and Dudh Kunda. These lakes are considered holy by both Hindus and Buddhists.Helambu is a culturally rich and serene region inhabited primarily by the Hyolmo people (often referred to as “Yolmo”). The area is known for:
- Peaceful Buddhist monasteries
- Terraced fields and forests
- Traditional villages like Tarkeghyang, Sermathang, and Melamchi Gaon
Helambu is a natural extension of the Langtang Gosainkunda trek. From Ghopte, after crossing Lauribina Pass, the trail descends through forests and ridges into the Helambu circuit, eventually connecting to Sundarijal or Melamchi Bazaar near Kathmandu.
Highlights
- Kyanjin Ri (4,773m) A short but steep 3–4 hour hike from Kyanjin Gompa takes you to the summit of Kyanjin Ri, offering stunning sunrise views over the Langtang Lirung range, valleys, and glaciers.
- Tserko Ri (5,033m) (Optional Extension) This high-altitude viewpoint requires 5–6 hours of hiking. Though challenging, it rewards you with panoramic vistas of the entire Langtang Himalaya. No teahouses along the way—carry your own water and snacks.
- Kyanjin Gompa (3,870m) The cultural heart of the Langtang Valley. This 700-year-old Buddhist monastery lies in a dramatic alpine setting and is surrounded by towering peaks. Explore nearby yak cheese factories and gompas.
- Gosainkunda Lake (4,460m) One of Nepal's most sacred lakes. According to legend, it was created by Lord Shiva, who pierced a glacier with his trident to quench his thirst after swallowing poison. Pilgrims especially visit during Janai Purnima to bathe in its holy waters.
